No. This entry is not about Julie Andrews or the Sound of Music.

It was the usual Sunday where you wake up early and put on your running gear. But this time, instead of heading to Fort Bonifacio I found myself going east to Brookside in Cainta.

Today I attacked the hills of Antipolo again together with my Happy Feet friends – Gigi thefitmommy, Bobby, Lito, Sir Ipe, Roselle and Sensei John. It was another chance for me to breakaway from the usual road races in the metro and accomplish my Nike Clinic assignment for the week.

We ran about 7 kms from Brookside Cainta to Hinulugan Taktak. With the weather cooperating, the group decided to run another 1 – 2 kms more to Antipolo Church. At the Antipolo Church, we had our usual chat over suman sa Ibus and even discussed about wearing Santa hat and reindeer antlers to match our red and green Yakult singlet. :P

It was another great and enjoyable run. Sa susunod uli!

I’ll make this post short and let the pictures do more of the talking. (thanks to fitmommy for the pictures)

Our company will be holding a 3K/6K/12K Fun Run-Fund Raising activity on December 6, 2008 at McKinley Hill. I haven’t decided yet on which races to participate this December so I signed up for the 12K run.

As part of the marketing campaign of our company’s FUNd Run to entice more employees to participate, a runner is randomly pick from the sign-up list to be featured on the weekly office digest. A female runner was featured last week and the organizing group wanted a male runner this week. After coming back from training, I got the email that I was the lucky guy. I was asked to share my personal story on running and to give my best running photos. The office digest came out this afternoon and has the link to featured runner of the week page.

“I got into running only last March 2008. I gained weight after my onshore stint and wanted to try other ways of losing weight aside from going to the gym. I started running 5K distance at first and I very much enjoyed it. Soon, I was joining every races whether in UP, the Fort or Alabang and I started blogging my running experiences. I recently completed my longest run – a 25K distance via the New Balance Power Race in Clark and I am looking forward in completing my first full marathon next year. Joining the Accenture FUNd Run for the second time is an opportunity for me to do what I love and to share my running experiences with Accenture co-workers.”

I was on a mission when I woke up this morning. The route for 10K is almost the same as the Nike Human Race – McKinley Hills and Heritage Park and I am definitely aiming for a big improvement. For this run I was able to improve my Nike Human Race time by more than 10 minutes. Official time is 55:18 which incidentally is also 1 minute faster than my 10K PR. Race Results are available in this link.

As with the recent Rio races, the UNICEF run is also one of the well-organized runs of the year. Ample water (no Rush this time), visible route and kilometer markers and freebies after the race – PhotoVendo, Starbucks (free coffee woohoo!). Congrats Coach Rio and UNICEF. The kids also get to play at the inflatable playground set up on the open field.

I ended the morning by having breakfast at McDonald’s with fellow Happy Feet runners. Thanks Sir Mon for the breakfast and again Happy Birthday.

15K VSO run and a 5K treadmill run. How am I going to complete a 25K run with just this training?

My journey towards conquering my first 25K run started Saturday afternoon. I arrived at our meeting place – Shell McKinley-EDSA at around 3PM. Mon, Bobby and Sensei John were already there and just waiting for Sir Ipe to arrive. We will be staying overnight at Tanya’s house in Tarlac which is just some 20-30 mintues away from Clark. A few minutes later Gene and Wayne arrived and I learned that they will be going with us and have dinner at Tanya’s house. It was a fun sight to see everybody in Tanya’s house – Doc Gigi, Mon, Bobby, Sir Ipe, Sensei John, Que, Jinoe, Roselle, Gene and Wayne. We were treated with native dishes – bringhe, caldereta, stuffed frogs, fried hito, ensalada with calamay for dessert. We had the usual chikahan over a cup (cups?) of coffee before calling it a night around 11PM.

The following morning, everybody was up early and we were off to Clark by 4:30AM. We arrived that the race site past 5AM and got our RFID chip. The race started late. Entering the starting pen, I saw familiar faces – Jay, JunC, Jaymie, Jonel, Joe, Philip, Bards (finally!), Vener, Mark and Dindo. I told Dindo that I would try to pace with him even though I know that he would be pacing a 6:00 mins/kms with Jaymie and JunC. Bahala na si Batman!

Running with a buddy/group definitely gives you a morale boost. Dindo, me and Jinoe were running most of the entire race together. We were just behind Jaymie and JunC on the first half of the race. Mark P and Joe stayed with us on the first few kilometers. At the 16K, Dindo decided to take a break. It was me and Jinoe running the next kilometer but this time I already am feeling a bit tired. I was running 2 kilometers all by myself and would did 2 short walk breaks. I even tried to pace with Charles (schlagger returns) but I was too tired keep up with him. It was at this point that I thought of quitting – the body is still willing but the mind is weak. Dindo eventually caught up with me and we continued to pace each other. He gave me a GU when I told him I feeling a bit dizzy. We managed to survive the uphills of the ruins and began a much faster pace on the last 4 kms. With less than 3 kms, Dindo told me he needed a break. I pushed myself on the remaining kilometers and was greatful for the cheers and encouragements from Ben and then from Jonel. I increased my pace and forgot about the pains as I saw the red inflatable Start/Finish mark I finished with my first 25K and longest run with a time of 2:42.

I am very much satisfied with my time as my 15K split was 3 minutes faster than my VSO time and my 21K split was way much faster than my 2:33 in Adidas KOTR. Salamat uli Dindo for pacing and pushing me and for the GU. Thanks also to Jinoe and to Jaymie and JunC for the 6:00 pace.

After the race, I get to chat with the Happy Feet group and other runners and of course do the usual photo-ops (more photos at my mutiply site – http://ibetlacbay.multiply.com). I had a chance to meet Johnny Sy (at the start of the race), Jerry (high altitude), Ibanrunner and Annie who won her age category. I also also lined up for the photo booth for post race photo-op. I really liked my photo souvenir and I plan to put it in my office cube together with my finishers medal. :P New Balance Power Race is definitely one of the best races for 2008!

While Gene, Wayne and I were heading back to Manila, I got a call from our volleyball team captain. He asked my if I could make it to our 3:15PM game to avoid a possible default. Since this is our last game for the elimination round and we don’t want to lose the top spot, I agreed but told him not to expect too much coz I’m still tired and haven’t recovered yet. During the warm-up, I was surprise to hit most of the sets and told my captain – “kaya ko pa. pwede pa akong pamalo”. In the end, I played for 2 sets, made 4 kills and we won the game.

Did you notice the photographers taking snapshots of runners during last Sunday’s VSO Run? Photos they took are now available for viewing and ordering at Photovendo. Photovendo is a brainchild of Photographer on the Run – Ben Chan. All you need to do is search your photos using your race bib number, select the photos you would like to order and pay using your credit card, paypal or by BDO bank deposit. Photos will be delivered to you after confirmation of payment. I’ve already tried this when I ordered my Nike Human Race photos. Galing!

Visit the photovendo site at www.photovendo.ph. Photos from Rush to Infinity and Nike Human Race are also available.

This race was a preparation for next week’s NB Power Race 25K run. I have already done a couple of long runs but haven’t run 15K in a race.

As usual, I woke up early around 3:30am (I live in Novaliches QC) and arrived at the Fort at 5am. As I was pinning my race bib, I saw Jinoe and he told me that Wayne was already making his warm up run. Wayne appeared after a few minutes and we chatted and had the first photo op of the race.

At the starting line, I got to see familiar faces – Jay, JunC, Doray, Mark, Tiffin, Jaymie (thanks for helping me with the Nike Training registration!), Joe, Mikey, Abby, Dindo, Jonel, Sir Ipe, Mon with the rest of Happy Feet, and to everybody’s surprise Nora. After several races, I finally got to meet Nora. She was taking photos with everybody and was very much happy to finally meet everyone.

The race started late(?). It was posted in runrio.com that the race will start at 5:30am but the starting gun was fired around 6am. The route was already a familiar one – Lawton/Bayani/Heritage/McKinley Hill then back. This is the first time that I ran a race without my iPod and Nike+ sportsband so I wasn’t able to keep track of my pace and time. I guess I just wanted to enjoy my first 15K and not worry about anything else. Also, I didn’t use my Nike Shox Arraw shoes but instead used my NB 835. My Valley Golf/Antipolo practice run last week paid off as I managed to survive the uphills of Bayani Road and McKinley Hill.

On the last kilometer, I saw Mark who was telling everybody to avoid the trees and to move to the middle lane. I moved to the middle lane and true enough saw there were a lot of “higad” dangling from the trees.  I increased my pace on the last few meters and crossed the finished line but was not able to see what my time was. I’ll just have to wait until the official results are posted but I think I had a good time. I also saw Gigi the fitmommy taking my picture as I crossed the finish line.

After the run, Jonel aka bugobugo invited me for a 2nd servings. I wasn’t able to join him as I need to get my things from MJ’s car. He was already gone by the time I got my stuff. Maybe next time. I did my 2nd servings with Mikey, Abby and her two other friends (sorry I forgot your names) instead. We did a couple of rounds around BHS then I proceeded to Chowking to meet Wayne and the rest of Happy Feet.

Update: I finished with a time of 1:33:24. Results have been posted at http://runrio.com

Red Cups

Starbucks Red Cups are out! For those of you who are Starbucks fanatics, this means it is time to collect those stickers to get your Starbucks Coffee 2009 planner. Good news is there is a Starbucks at our new office location. Bad news is I won’t be tasting my favorite Peppermint Mocha this year. But I already found my caffeine fix in Dark Cherry Mocha (non-fat and no whip of course!)

Blood

Clumsy. I stepped on a piece of metal in our garage as I was about to turn-off the lights last night. Before I knew it, blood was already gushing out of my right heel. I was wearing slippers but for some reason that piece of metal still found its way through my heel. Ouch! There is still a slight pain but I’m praying the wound would heal in time for Sunday’s run.
